Angry residents of Akenfa area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital yesterday staged a protest against the shooting to death on Friday night a 20 years old undergraduate of the State owned Varsity, the Niger Delta University by a policeman.

The trigger happy policeman,identified as sergeant Timadi Emmanuel,is attached to the Akenfa Police Division patrol team, shot dead Tariela Nikade, a the Petroleum Engineering student during a security raid in the area.

It was gathered that the police raids, which have been ongoing in most parts of the State due to the upsurge in crime and criminality , was thrown into confusion on Friday with the killing of the undergraduate.

While the residents of Akenfa staged a brief protest against the killing, some pro-supporters of the State owned police outfit, Doo Akpor are planning a huge protest against the operations of the police and alleged destruction of the State Security architecture with incessant deployment of Police Commissioner.

Reacting to the killing of the 20years old undergraduate, authorities of the Bayelsa State Police Command condoled with the family and assures that justice will be done.

According to the Bayelsa State Police Command through its spokesperson DSP Asinim Butswat expressed regret over the unfortunate incident involving a Police Officer and a resident of Tenacious Road, Edepie, Yenagoa.

According to the Police, “On 23 November, 2018, at about 1930 hours, Sergeant Timadi Emmanuel attached to a patrol team of Akenfa Division, while on patrol at Tenacious Road, Edepie, under questionable circumstances shot one Tariela Nikade ‘m’ 20 years. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.”

“The Sergeant has been disarmed, arrested and is undergoing orderly room trial. Investigation is in progress and it’s outcome will be made public.”

“The Command is hereby appealing to residents to be calm and assures the family and the general public that justice will be done.”
