The Oversee Digital Communications for President Muhammadu Buhari and Aso Rock, Tolu Ogunlesi has described as “fake news” the report making the rounds that the president has given approval for the establishment of state and local government  Police.

Yesterday, President Buhari received the presentation of the Report of the Presidential Panel on SARS Reform, which was constituted as a result of public outcry and various media reports on allegations of human rights violations perpetrated by officers and men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

However, some newspaper carried the news as the president approving the establishment of state and local government police.

Correcting the erroneous reports in a series of tweets, Ogunlesi also referred to the reports as “copy and paste.”

His three tweets on the topic read:

“Copy and Paste. That’s a big problem. Once one piece of inaccurate reporting breaks free it goes viral instantly, because of the habit of copying and pasting…”

“Fake News. There were no “approvals” given. Ceremony was for submission of Panel Report (more than 2,000 pages long) – which made several recommendations. President received Report & directed IGP, Min of Justice & NHRC to “work out modalities for implementation within 3 months.”
