The Federal Government of Nigeria has sent out a stern warning to state governors that have adopted the style of hijacking funds allocated to local governments in their respective states.

The Presidency ordered the office of the attorney-general to take a scrutinizing look on these erring governors. The Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Niger Delta Affairs, Ita Enang issued the warning that presidency would ensure such governors face prosecution when at the expiration of their tenure.

According to Daily Trust, the Presidency made the stern warning on Wednesday, January 15, insisting that when such corruptible governors finished their tenure, their immunity would’ve expired.

Ita Enang, also called on the accountant-general of the federation as well as the attorney-general of the federation to oversee strict monitoring of how funds allocated to each states are spent.

He further maintained that, this must be done to assist government at the grassroots in effectively carrying out their obligations. According to Edet Ekpenyong Etuk, Enang’s spokesperson, in a statement quoting his principal.

“This is to make the governors aware that they would be made to face trial in accordance with the rule of law when their immunity has eventually elasped.”

He also pointed out that most local government secretariats have been taken over by weeds with their healthcare systems collapsing at the grassroots while workers refused to do their beats but receiving salaries from government purse.
