Policing in Bayelsa will be intelligence gathering driven” – New Police Commissioner …warn against human right abuses, extra judicial killings

A new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mike Okoli has said the Bayelsa Police Command under his administration will rely fully on intelligence gathering to ensure proper policing of lives and property in the state.

Ikoli, who assumed duty last Friday also warned police personnel under the command against engaging in human right abuses, extra judicial and other vices.

Police Commissioner Mike Ikoli, who becomes the 37th Police Commissioner for Bayelsa State, also outlined that his administration will be intelligence gathering driven and encourage the citizen to engage in the arrest of criminals without necessarily I volving themselves in jungle justice.

Okoli, while addressing newsmen in Yenagoa, declared that he is assuming duty well prepared to maintain Law and Order, fight crime and criminality and to ensure that the good people of Bayelsa State including those residing and doing lawful business in the state are protected.

He said upon assumption of office, he has met various stakeholders on the status of the of
security in the state. And that he will key into the positive aspects of the existing security architecture to strengthen and confront the security challenges in the state.

According to him, “The people of Bayelsa State, are hardworking and enterprising therefore deserve a conducive atmosphere to carry out their legitimate business and enjoy to the maximum their deserved dividends democracy.

” Together with my management team and the crop of seasoned and dedicated officers in the state, I’ll ensure the highest level of professionalism in policing Bayelsa State.

We shall work closely and in synergy with sister security agencies, Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and Faith Based Organization to fight crime and to expose any infractions within our system. “

” We will develop new crime fighting and prevention strategies to motivated to achieve desired results. We shall establish a special squad that will promptly respond and deal with violent crimes and social miscreants. The Command will strive to ensure that crime does not take place and if it does, we shall respond promptly, pursue the hoodlums, subdue them and apprehend them to face the law.”

Okoli, who commended the men and Rank and file of the command, noted that the State Police Command will implement fully the vision of the IGP Mohammed A. Adamu on community policing,” . In this regard; Bayelsans will participate and play fundamental roles in the provision of security in the state. Accordingly, the method of policing will be all inclusive and transparent.”

“The idea and the spirit of community policing is to bring policing back to the people.Policing in the state shall be intelligence driven. The Command under my watch will run an open door policy. We shall not condone police involvement in tluman Rights abuses and extra judicial killings.”
