Onnoghen’s ordeal is like that of a tortoise who is going on a senseless journey and you ask the tortoise as to when it will get wise and come back? “Not until I have been disgraced”, the tortoise will reply (with apology to Ola Rotimi, in his novel, “The Gods Are Not To Blame”.

Without prejudice to the flawed process which the FG sought to remove the Suspended CJN, if only Onnoghen had listened to superior argument and advise of some careful observers, he could have avoided himself the embarrassment as the first CJN in the history of Nigeria to be Suspended and subsequently embarrassed out of office.

It is true that he may have a case to argue before the court but his early admission of guilt should have been enough for him to see reason and honourably resign just to preserve his good name. If this had happened, the FG’s agents could not have digged deeper into his past life.

He ought to have read the handwriting on the wall and hurriedly do the needful. But when regionalism and other premordial sentiments started playing in to politicise the whole thing, plus the Intimidating appearance of the over 40 Senior Advocates in defense of the Suspended CJN, I knew this development would lead to this unfortunate end.

Therefore, although I wrote in defense of the embattled CJN and criticise the procedure the FG sought to oust him, I later, like many careful observers, wrote to advise him to see reason and resign since he has already confessed and accepted defeat before the legal battle.

He couldn’t listen and the desperados continued to dig into his ugly past which revealed a lot of dirty deals. The investigation subsequently revealed more than the FG needs to disgrace him out of office.

Apart from the financial mess and scandal the Suspended CJN involved in, yesterday, another report had it that a judicial panel was once constituted 25 years ago which recommended the sack of Mr. Onnoghen for financial impropriety (corruption) – a revelation which many Nigerians are unaware of until yesterday. This is the final straw that breaks the camel’s back and had given his adversaries confidence to push for his suspension. Alas, it has come to pass.

You will agree with me that if the man had earlier toe the path of honour and had done the needful, all these damning and mind boggling revelations couldn’t have happened!
