The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has stated it’s position on the federal government order to block SIM cards not linked with National Identification Number(NIN) within two weeks.

The Telecom union in a statement released on Sunday by its President, Mr Tomori Opeyemi has rejected the order by the federal government.

Recall that the federal government on wednesday had ordered Telecom to block all SIM cards not connected with the National Identification Number (NIN) starting from January 1st 2021.

But speaking on Sunday, Tomori disclosed that the time given for subscribers in the country is to short to meet up with the enrollment adding that it’s impossible for Telecom workers to register over 170millions Nigerians who have not enrolled for NIN within the two weeks ultimatum given.

The union said it’s another kind of punishment for Nigerians if the federal government fail to reverse the decision as the country already faces lot of hardship and difficulties including Kidnapping, Terrorism, Killings, Banditry, Fuel and Electricity tariff hike.

Tomori asked the federal government to address the problems Nigerians are facing for not obtaining their NIN instead of issuing or setting a deadline for the enrollment. He said most subscribers face a lot of difficulties in the registration centres, Some people left home early in the morning around 4a.m to 5a.m for the registration centres and still waited a long on the queue and those that can’t withstand this went back to their various houses. The union as a result therefore urged the federal government to immediately reverse it’s decision.

The union also lamented that owing to the fact that Nigeria may have entered the second wave of Coronavirus pandemic, it becomes dangerous and risky for users to storm the registration centres without contracting the virus.

When NAIJA LIVE TV visited some areas of the NIN registration centres during the weekend, it was gathered that only 30-40 people are being attended to perday for the enrollment while many others who also have been on the queue would be told to come another day.

A 400L microbiology student of OAU, Osunyomi Deborah who also went for the NIN enrollment in Ile-ife, Osun state told NAIJA LIVE TV on Sunday that she was unable to the registration as a result of the long queue and was told to come another day.

Deborah quoted saying; I went to the NIN registration center on Friday, but before I got their, they have picked number, they said it’s only thirty people they will attend to so I was told to come on Monday by 7a.m
