The National Economic Council (NEC), presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, has dumped the national social register under Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, claiming it lacks credibility.

In place of the register, NEC proposed implementing a cash transfer programme for states based on their social records and a cash reward policy for public servants for six months.

This was part of the over five hours meeting by council members at State House, Abuja, on Thursday, July 20.

The Thursday meeting, which was the second since the inauguration of the council by President Bola Tinubu, is focusing on ways to cushion the effect of petrol subsidy removal.

The meeting deliberated on coordinating the economic planning efforts and financial programmes of the various levels of government.
