The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forth-coming gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, Hon. David Lyon has affirmed his commitment to free and fair election, as this is the only way through which the desire of Bayelsans for a paradigm shift can be attained.
He stated this against the backdrop of the last Local Government “Elections” in which the PDP-led State Government used the instrumentality of the State Independent Electoral Commission to brazenly flout all known standards of good election.
Mr Lyon made these remarks during a courtesy call on him by the Consul General of the American Embassy, Claire Pierangelo at his residence in Igbogene Town in Yenagoa, on Tuesday, 23rd October, 2019.
Mr Lyon used the opportunity of this visit by the Consul-General to bare his mind on a wide range of issues.
He said, he is an ordinary Bayelsan and that he empathizes with the generality of Bayelsans who have been held down by poverty and want.
He, therefore, expressed his firm resolve to turn the situation around for the common people of the State.
Identifying security, energy and agriculture as some of the areas he would pay priority attention to if elected as Governor. Mr Lyon asserted that he would work assiduously to ensure that the security of lives and property in Bayelsa State is guaranteed.
He observed that, the current condemnable state of security in the State constituted a major hindrance to development, and that once the menace of insecurity is effectively tackled the State will blossom.
On agriculture, Mr Lyon, specifically expressed his resolve to ensure that rice farms similar to the Peremabiri Rice farm are developed, adding that the existing Peremabiri Rice farm would be properly developed.
He promised to take all steps necessary to ensure food security through the development of various people-orientated agricultural practices.
Hon. David Lyon also emphasized his passion to ensure that the State enjoys long hours of power supply, as opposed to the prevailing situation where power is not available for days and weeks, and sometimes months.
He promised to drive darkness out of Bayelsa State. Mr Lyon noted that his entrance to the governorship race was driven entirely by the burning desire to serve, and nothing else.
Speaking, the Consul-General of the US, Claire Pierangelo, noted that it was the duty of Nigerians to entrench a good democratic process and called on the people of Bayelsa State to vote for whichever candidate of their choice.
Pierangelo charged the parties and their faithful to ensure a peaceful and transparent process during the elections for the international community to have faith in the country’s electoral process.
The US and UK in collaboration with the European Union are particularly interested in the outcome of the forthcoming elections and are willing to come back to observe the process.
