The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was on Thursday afternoon rocked by twin explosions believed to be dynamites, which exploded in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) parked in front of the secretariat.

NAIJA LIVE TV gathered that the explosions sent jittery down the spines of party members who had gathered at the secretariat for the councillorship primaries holding at the scene of the explosions, with the members scampering for safety.

A source said that the suspected dynamites exploded at about 3 pm at the Aba Road Secretariat of the ruling party in the state.

While the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Tambari Sydney Gbara, would not comment on the matter, an eyewitness who confirmed the confirmed the incident said that the explosions created panic among the party loyalists.

“There was panic today​ as two dynamites exploded during the Councillorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party. I was at the party secretariat. The dynamite was detonated by suspected bombers in an SUV car along with the Aba road office of the party secretariat at about 3 pm,” the source who pleaded anonymity volunteered.

According to him, party supporters who had come to the secretariat o support their candidates at the primaries scampered in different directions.

The source added that “It is not, however, clear on the reason of the blast, but it might not be unconnected to allegations of imposition of candidates in some LGAs.”

Nigerian Tribune furthered learnt that normalcy was restored later as the members who had earlier taken to flight, later returned to continue with the exercise.

As at the time of filing this report, no group had claimed responsibility for the blasts, just as the security agencies in the state were said to be working to unravel the source of the suspected dynamites and those responsible for the blasts and their motive.
