#NaijaLiveTv >>>>The Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd.) has commended the authorities of the Brass Local Government Council led by the Chairman, Hon. Bello Bina over the decision to embark on a shore protection project in the council headquarters, Twon-Brass, describing it as a “Bold step to safeguard the council against trubulent ocean surge and heavy erosion.
Deputy Governor Jonah said though the shore protection job is an elephant project that should have been done by the Federal Ministry of Environment and other intervention agencies, the decision by the Brass Local Council to undertake the project was to protect the Brass Indigenes and their properties from being washed away from the rapaging ocean.
The Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah, who made this observation today during a tour of the project site in Twon-Brass, said the the project would mitigate the effects of the turbulent waves of the ocean.
Jonah, who was accompanied by the Brass Local Government Chairman, Hon. Bello Bina and other top government functionaries from the State,while inspecting the project, said: “This is a turbulent area. Water is not a respecter of person and the strength of waves you cannot predict. So he has done quite a good job to limit the effects erosion could have on the various Brass communities.”
According to him”This is actually the job of the Ministry of Environment and environmental agencies, so we also plead that the Federal Government.”
He stressed that despite the commendable efforts of the Leadership of the local Government Council, “the intervention of the federal government will provide a permanent solution to the issue of ocean encroachment and massive erosion”
He noted that the project is capital intensive and beyond the financial capacity of the local or the state government.
While pleading with other council chairmen to emulate Bello, the Bayelsa Deputy Governor insisted that “it is the only way to protect our communities from being washed away by the ocean.”
The deputy governor however maintained that there is room for improvement in order to make the job sustainable.
