The Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu Saturday described the recent defection of federal lawmakers and Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a genuine movement to rescue Nigeria.

Ekweremadu berated those personalising the mass defection across the federation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that it was no longer about anybody’s individual political ambition.
He expressed the view during in Enugu yesterday, noting that what had happened so far was “a tip of the iceberg” as so many other top political office-holders would soon dump the ruling party.
He, therefore, described the PDP as the fastest growing political in Africa, noting that spirits “have been high within the PDP family and Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), mainly after the joining and rejoining of the PDP and the coalition by scores of federal and state lawmakers.
“We are happy for this. But I have good news for you. Nigerians have only witnessed a tip of the iceberg. More people are on their way because it is no longer about anybody’s individual political ambition.
“It is now a movement to rescue Nigeria. So, we are not only the biggest political party, we are also the fastest growing political party in Africa today.
“I want to assure you that so many respected Nigerians have also keyed into this movement to rescue Nigeria because the world is now very worried for our nation.
“So, in a matter of months, Nigerians will go to the polls to enthrone a new order of peace, unity, security, and respect for the rule of law.”
Ekweremadu pledged to support the re-election of Enugu State Governor, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, noting that the people of Enugu West Senatorial District would ensure his re-election.
He added that not only would nobody from the district contest against the governor, but the people of the senatorial district would also obtain the party’s nomination form for him at the right time.
He said: “Not long ago, the entire Enugu West Senatorial District gathered here to endorse Governor Ugwuanyi for a second term. So, we can only say we remain committed to that decision. He has done very well and deserves a second, straight term in office.”In his response, Ugwuanyi appreciated the people of Awgu Local Government for trooping out in their numbers to endorse his reelection bid, assuring that he would not disappoint them
