The independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has de-registered over 70 political parties in the country.

Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, said the parties failed to meet constitutional requirements that determine the continuous existence of political parties in the country.

Sixteen political parties survived the deregistration process.

The commission carried out a review of the performance of political parties after the 2019 general elections to see which parties qualify to exists.

This led to the deregistering of 74 parties leaving only 18 political parties in Nigeria.
