Bill for management of Akwa Ibom Assembly funds passes second reading

The Bill for a law to make provisions for the Management of Funds of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and for other related matters has passed first and second reading during plenary.

Recall that the bill had earlier been passed by the House but the State Governor could not assent to it and it became time barred.

The bill sponsored by the Leader of the House, Mr. Udo Kierian Akpan, was thereafter referred to the House Committee on Finance and Appropriations by the Speaker, Mr Aniekan Bassey, for further legislative action.

Also, the House said it received an impeachment notice from Oruk Anam Legislative Council against the recently re-instated Vice Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Council, Abasiama Etukakpan.

The impeachment notice is a fallout from the councillors’ earlier attempt to remove Etukakpan from office due to the allegation of false declaration of age levelled against him by the councillors.

Recall that on March 23, 2021, Abasiama Etukakpan was allegedly impeached by the councillors but on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, the State House of Assembly nullified the alleged impeachment after legislative scrutiny of a petition sent to the House by lawyer to the embattled Oruk Anam Vice Chairman.

The House of Assembly, in reinstating Etukakpan, had described the purported impeachment as a complete illegality and a total mess on democratic tenets.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Aniekan Bassey, referred the impeachment notice to a Special Ad Hoc Committee headed by the member representing Etinan State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Aniefiok Denis Akpan.

The Committee is to look into the allegations contained on the impeachment notice and report back to the House within one month.

Meanwhile, the House has passed three bills which had scaled through legislative processes into law.

The bills are; bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State Security Trust Fund and for other connected purposes; a bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State Sports Development Fund and for other connected purposes and a bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State College of Nursing Sciences and for other purposes connected therewith.
