Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, has approved the appointment of Abubakar Maigari as the Emir of Maru.

Mahadi Gusau, Zamfara State deputy governor, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

The appointment followed the dethronement of Abubakar Cika, the emir who was indicted by a panel that investigated his alleged support for bandits in the state.

Matawalle had also approved the removal of Lawal Ahmad, the district head of Kanoma under Maru emirate council.

The duo had earlier been suspended over their alleged involvement in banditry.

Cika and Ahmad’s plight began in July when their subjects attacked them in Kanoma town after an attack that led to the death of over 30 people.

Residents of Maru had called on the governor to remove both men.

In a tweet on Saturday, Governor Matawalle, through his verified Twitter handle, @Bellomatawalle1, had announced the sack of the emir, adding that it was a shame for leaders to be at the forefront of the destruction of their communities.

“We have sacked the Emir of Maru, Abubakar Cika, for aiding and abetting bandits in the state. He will be prosecuted with the district head of Kanoma, Ahmed Kanoma.

“It’s a shame that leaders who are supposed to protect their communities are the frontrunners of its destruction,” the governor had tweeted.

Until his appointment, the new emir was the senior district head of Maru emirate.

He is the 14th Banaga of Maru.
