PORT HARCOURT – There was heavy shootings on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as gunmen invade a peaceful protest by Pro-African Action Congress, AAC, groups.

The groups, United Niger Deltans for Buhari, UNDB, and Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisation in Rivers State had yesterday stormed Port Harcourt in protest against the collation of the governorship and state assembly elections in the state.

This was happening as the Rivers State Government in a statement by the Commissioner of Information and Communications, Emma Okah, had placed temporary ban on street protests in the state.

However, the two groups had defied the order of the state government and led protest from Air force Junction on Aba road through Rumuola to Agip junction in Port Harcourt.

Meanwhile, the protest was put to abrupt, stop when suspected thugs invaded and attacked the protesters.

The gunmen had intercepted the peace protest around Hotel Presidential-Birabi area, GRA, Port Harcourt, with stones, bottles and later gunshots.

Meanwhile, one of the leaders of the Protest, His Royal Highness, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, noted that the state government used thugs to stop the protest.

Sara-Igbe stated that the groups had obtained police permit before embarking on the protest, adding that the government could not use the police to enforce its order.

He said: “We obtained police clearance for the protest and police gave us go ahead order. Some boys were hired to disrupt the protest. They came and shot into the crowd. The government does not have respect for human lives.

“The government is mean to citizens of the state. They are brutal. They have shown that they are brutal.

“Our boys after the shot at us, thank God nobody died, came out to challenge the boys but I stopped them. They have shown that they are killers.

“We expected the governor to come an attack us himself, but he rather used boys. But, we still achieved our aim.”
