Ekiti State Coordinator of a campaign volunteer group by the name “I will vote Atiku”, Dr. Babajide Ogunjana has condemned in strong terms the harassment of former Vice-President of Nigeria and Peoples Democratic Party presidential flag bearer in 2019 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar by security operatives said to be acting on ‘orders from above’.
Babajide said subjecting Abubakar, candidate of a major opposition party to harassment and embarrassment at the airport after a brief holiday in Dubai is a new low in the efforts of the ruling party to suppress leading opposition figures in Nigeria.
Babajide condemned the federal government’s in a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti after an executive meeting of the leadership of “I will vote Atiku” on Sunday.
Reports had it that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and his aircraft on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja on Sunday were subjected to heavy scrutiny by a deluge of security men, a move believed to be a subtle attempt to intimidate the PDP candidate.
Babajide who said actions like this is a direct invitation to chaos and anarchy if continued warned President Muhammadu Buhari not to push to the precipice, patience of the teeming Nigerians who are already exasperated of the incompetence which has become the hallmark of the Buhari administration.
“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to downplay his dictatorial tendencies and for once pretend to be a democrat. We were in this country when certificate forgers were given VIP treatment at the airport enroute London instead of being charged to court for forgery and destruction of the Nigerian economy via sheer incompetence.
“Since when has Alhaji Atiku Abubakar become a common criminal to be hounded and tossed around by men of the NDLEA and Custom services?
“President Buhari, his handlers and managers should be reminded that Nigeria belongs to us all, the democracy Buhari enjoys today was once truncated by this same man but we battled these principalities and restored the process, any attempt to thwart or subvert the wish of majority of Nigerians this time around will be totally resisted”, the statement read in part.
