A man, Duane “Keefe-D” Davis, accused of allegedly masterminding the shooting death of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas in 1996, appeared in court for the first time on a murder charge on Wednesday, Associated Press reports on Thursday, October 5.

The self-described gangster, who wore a dark-blue jail uniform and plastic orange slippers, was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, but the hearing was cut short after he asked the Clark County District Judge, Tierra Jones, to postpone the hearing while he retains counsel in Las Vegas.

Davis, who has been a long-known suspect in the case and publicly admitted his role in Tupac’s killing in interviews ahead of his 2019 tell-all memoir, revived the police investigation that led to his indictment, police and prosecutors said.

After his arrest last Friday, a grand jury indictment was unsealed in Clark County District Court, charging him with murder. Grand jurors also voted to add sentencing enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon and alleged gang activity.

Although the rapper’s stepbrother, Mopreme Shakur, wasn’t in court on Wednesday, he told The Associated Press that he’s been following developments in the case from his home in Los Angeles, even as he and his family are “trying to manage our expectations.”
