UYO – Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan on Monday joined the Young Progressives Party (YPP) with over 5,000 supporters from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Senator Albert last Friday officially rejected his membership of his former party on grounds of distrust and witchunting by its leadership.
OBA, as fondly called is contesting the Governorship under the YPP ticket after a long drawn legal battle against the PDP in Akwa Ibom ended in favour of PDP.
The decamping of the lawmaker with wife and more than 5000 PDP stalwarts shook the ruling party in the State to the chargrine of the Governor, Udom Emmanuel.
The ceremony which held in his hometown, Ibiono Ibom Eastern 1 Ward, was witnessed by a tumultuous crowd of supporters and well-wishers.
The Senator and wife, Imaobong, who enjoyed mass followership of their people, picked membership cards number 3887 and 5006, respectively.
After the duo completed all the party membership membership registration formalities before the Ward chairman, their cards were later presented to them by the state chairman, Pastor Nyenime Andy, on behalf of the party.
While welcoming him and others into the new party, Pst. Andy said YPP, has become the fastest growing party in the state with the senator’s entrance.
In appreciation of his people and the party, OBA, on behalf of his wife, family and supporters, declared himself ad vessel in the handd of God to bring positive change to Akwa Ibom state.
He said though some persons boasted in their financial warchests, they can never buy the conscience and rights of the people.
According to him, “today, a new Akwa Ibom has birth.
” Akwa Ibom for you and Akwa Ibom for me. Akwa Ibom where there will be justice for all”, he said, commending Pastor Andy for rejecting all financial inducements from dubious elements to do wrong”.
He offered himself to God, Akwa Ibom people, and the party to use him to change Akwa Ibom State.
He said 2023 will be about “character, competence and capacity”, assuring that he will never let Akwa Ibom people down.
Senator Bassey pledged that he and his teeming supporters were joining the party to help build and improve the foundation so that it can form the next government of Akwa Ibom state.
The decamping of the lawmaker was unexpected by his former party, PDP, development many accused the leadership for mortgaging the trust of members.
Meanwhile, more decamping will hit PDP in the next few weeks, as another strong Natıonal Assembly lawmaker is expected to leave the party with hordse of followers accussing the Governor, Emmanuel for destroying PDP.
