President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State following rising tensions and a pipeline explosion. As a result, Governor Sim Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the entire state assemblyโboth factions aligned with Wike and Fubaraโhave been suspended for six months.
Tinubu justified the decision by stating that the governor failed to manage the initial explosion, leaving the state vulnerable. He invoked Section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution to address the situation. However, this does not mean Fubara has been removed from office; rather, it is a constitutional measure aimed at restoring order. Once stability is achieved, the suspended authorities will be reinstated.

In 2004, President Olusegun Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Plateau State, suspending Governor Joshua Dariye and the State Assembly for six months, replacing them with a military administration.
In 2006, Obasanjo also declared a state of emergency in Ekiti State, removing Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Abiodun Olujimi, appointing retired Army General Tunji Olurin as administrator for six months.
In 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Adamawa, Yobe, and Borno due to Boko Haram activities but did not suspend democratic institutions.
While a state of emergency is a significant intervention, it is considered a less extreme measure than martial law. However, Tinubu has not yet clarified plans for temporary administration in Rivers State.
The National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, must approve the declaration; otherwise, it will be overruledโthough this scenario is unlikely. The emergency period can also be extended for another six months if necessary.
Explosion & Public Reaction:
Reports from Rivers suggest that militants were not involved in the explosion, and Fubara was present at the scene to assess and control the situation. Some allegations point to internal sabotage by Wikeโs camp.
Many Nigerians question the necessity of a state of emergency, arguing that states plagued by banditry and herdsmen attacks, where lives are lost daily, have not received similar federal intervention. They criticize the decision, seeing it as prioritizing a political conflict over more dire security threats.
For now, all impeachment attempts in Rivers have been halted, and reports indicate military movements in administrative areas of the state.
