A 45-year-old shop assistant, Chidi Chibueze, who allegedly stole electrical cables valued at N8.3 million, on Wednesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The defendant, whose residential address was not given, is standing trial on a count charge of stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Jimoh Joseph told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 10, at 1.00p.m. at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos.

Joseph said: “Chibueze stole electrical cables valued at N8.3 million from his employer, Mr Enoch Okwenne.

“The defendant sold the cables without remitting the money into the business’s account.”

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287(7) provides for seven years’ imprisonment for stealing.

The defendant, however, denied the offence.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. A. Runsewe granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed, adding that one of the sureties must be a close relation of the defendant.

Runsewe also ordered that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until till Sept. 12, for mention.
