The ex-president of the Republic of Congo, President Jacques Joaquim Yhombi-Opango, has been reported dead.

The family said he died after contracting the deadly coronavirus at the age of 81.

The president was ill before he contacted the coronavirus, his son told newsmen.

Joaquim was born in 1939 in the northern Cuvette region of the country. He was an army officer who got to power after assassinating President Marien Ngouabi.

He aligned with the Soviet Union whenNgouabi was president in 1968-1977.

Yhombi-Opango was accused of taking part in a coup against Sassou Nguesso and was jailed from 1987-1990.

Subsequently, he was released a few months before the national conference that took place in 1991.

This conference gave room for multi-party politics in Central African Countries.

He founded the Rally for Democracy and Development Party and contested for the presidential election in 1992, but he lost.

Jacques later worked with the elected president, Pascal Lissouba and became his Prime Minister between 1994 to 1996

Yhombi-Opango flew to exile in 1997 when the civil war broke out in Congo.

He later returned to the country in 2007 but was living between Congo and France due to his health challenges.
