The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, His Majesty King Bubaraye Dakolo, Agada IV, has called for unity, institutional reform, and strategic leadership within the Ijaw National Congress (INC) to reposition the Ijaw nation for cohesion and national relevance.

King Dakolo made the appeal while receiving INC presidential aspirant, High Chief MacDonald Ebi Igbadiwe, and his delegation at the Council Chambers in Yenagoa.

The monarch observed that the Ijaw nation stands at a critical juncture, with internal divisions posing its most pressing challenge.

He noted that fragmentation among villages, kingdoms, and states has weakened collective strength and reduced the nation’s bargaining power within the Nigerian federation, stressed that unity remains the foundation of political relevance, economic growth, and territorial integrity, and emphasized that meaningful progress requires deliberate internal cohesion, which he said is currently lacking.

The Royal Father further highlighted the worsening security situation across Ijaw communities, citing rising insecurity, youth restiveness, and declining moral standards as threats to communal stability.

Recalling a time when movement between communities was peaceful, he urged prospective INC leadership to prioritize internal security, discipline, and collective responsibility.

On economic development, King Dakolo underscored the decades of resource extraction and persistent deprivation in oil-producing areas, stressing the need for coordinated advocacy, strategic planning, and principled leadership within the Ijaw socio-political framework.

He also called for constitutional compliance, transparency, and fairness in the upcoming INC leadership process, assuring that the Traditional Rulers Council would remain neutral and provide equal opportunity to all aspirants.

In his remarks, High Chief Igbadiwe outlined his longstanding involvement in the INC at clan, zonal, and national levels.

He expressed concern over the growing monetization of the organization’s electoral processes, arguing that leadership of a socio-cultural body should not be determined by financial capacity.

Chief Igbadiwe also advocated structural reforms to restore credibility, strengthen the role of traditional institutions within the INC framework, and ensure inclusive representation of Ijaw communities across Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa states.

Present at the meeting were several Royal Fathers, including HRM Pere S. P. Luke, Kalanama VIII, HRM King (Dr.) W. S. Joshua Igbugburu X, HRM Jonathan B. Kubor, Okuno III, HRM King (Dr.) Funpere G. Akah, JP, SP (Rtd), HRM King Solomon Ebifatei Edi-Mangi, Kolu XI, HRM King (Capt.)
